Junk a car without a title in Missouri

Every legal fact on this page is checked against Missouri's official sources - the state agency or the state's own statutes - and carries a link to it. Where Missouri has no published answer, we say so instead of filling the gap.

This is information, not legal advice. Fees and procedures change, and your own situation may not match the general rule. Every fact below links to its official source - the agency's page or the statute - so check it there before you act, and call Missouri Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Bureau if anything about your car is unusual.

The short answer for Missouri: In Missouri a scrap metal operator may buy a car without the title only if it is at least 10 model years old and inoperable - which the law defines as rusted, wrecked, discarded, worn out, extensively damaged, dismantled and mechanically inoperative, with scrap as its best use. A car that merely will not start does not qualify. You give the operator a copy of your state ID and a bill of sale and certify that you have the legal right to sell it; the operator checks online for liens unless the car is at least 20 model years old. For any other car, get a duplicate title first ($8.50 plus a $9 processing fee). Confirm with the Missouri Department of Revenue before you sell.

What Missouri requires, from the state's own source

National guides average the fifty states into one paragraph and get most of them wrong. Below is the Missouri rule with its source attached, so you can check it yourself before you talk to any buyer.

Step 1: check whether you can simply order a replacement title

If the car is registered to you and carries no lien, ordering a duplicate restores the full offer instead of the discounted one, for the cost of a single form and a fee. Whether that is worth doing is arithmetic, not a rule: compare the fee below against what the missing title costs you in the table further down. On a car that will not start, in a state with a higher fee, the duplicate can cost more than it recovers in price - but it also opens up buyers who will not take a car without a title.

Replacement title fee

$17.50

Step 2: if the car cannot be titled

When a duplicate is not available to you - the car is in someone else's name, or it was never titled to you - Missouri has a specific route:

Missouri: selling without a title in your name

If you have a bill of sale but no title for a car made 26 or more years before the current model year, Missouri can issue you a junking certificate, provided no theft claim has been made and the Highway Patrol confirms by letter that the car is not listed as stolen. For a newer car that is not in your name, the sale goes through the titled owner or their estate.

Step 3: plates, registration and insurance

Confirm with Missouri Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Bureau whether Missouri expects the plates to stay with the car or come back to you, and do not cancel insurance until ownership has actually been released.

What the car is worth in Missouri without a title

A missing title does not reduce the scrap floor. The recyclable metal and the catalytic converter are worth the same either way, because a recycler is buying material rather than a car. What you lose is part of the resale premium, so the discount is largest on a car that still drives and smallest on one that will not start.

Clean title vs. no title: the same car, three conditions

A mid-size four-cylinder sedan, about 3,300 lb, catalytic converter still on the car, no damage, priced for Missouri. Calculated by our estimator, not quoted from a buyer.

ConditionWith a clean titleWith no titleYou give up
Runs and drives$230 - $310$210 - $285about 7%
Starts but will not drive$230 - $310$210 - $285about 7%
Will not start$190 - $235$190 - $235no change

Estimates, not offers. The gap narrows as the car gets closer to pure scrap, because the recyclable metal and the catalytic converter are worth the same with or without paperwork.

The no-title prices assume a buyer can legally take this car without a title under the Missouri rule above. Where the rule does not cover your car - in many states a car that still runs - the realistic route is a replacement title first.
