Should you repair or junk your car?

When a big repair bill lands, the question is whether to fix the car or let it go. A simple rule and a quick value check make the call clear.

The 50% rule

A common guideline: if a repair costs more than half of what the car is worth running, it usually is not worth fixing. If your car is worth $3,000 running and the repair is $2,000, that is a strong signal to sell.

The rule is a starting point, not gospel. A reliable car you know well may justify a pricier repair than a car that has been nickel-and-diming you.

Run the comparison

Get two numbers: the repair quote, and what the car is worth as-is if you sell it. If the repair plus the car's risk of more failures outweighs its running value, selling is the rational move. An honest junk car estimate gives you the second number.

Frequently asked questions

If a repair costs more than half the car's value when running, it generally is not worth fixing - selling the car is usually the better financial choice.
