The documents that matter
In most cases you need the vehicle title and a photo ID. A bill of sale records the transaction, and a release of liability (filed with your DMV) protects you from anything that happens to the car after you sell it - tickets, tolls, or abandonment claims.
If you don't have the title
You can often request a duplicate title from your DMV with ID and registration. Some buyers accept alternatives for very old or low-value cars. Because rules vary by state, confirm what your state and buyer require before pickup.
Protect yourself after the sale
Remove your license plates (many states require returning or transferring them), cancel your insurance after the car is gone, and keep a copy of the bill of sale and pickup confirmation. File a release of liability so the car is no longer your responsibility.
Frequently asked questions
